The Department of Home Affairs has announced that up to 70% of the existing 186/187 applications being processed were considered “high risk” and that current refusal rates for these visas have increased dramatically over the last year.

DHA disclosed that current refusal rates for subclass 187 visas are 50% (assumed to represent visa and nomination rates combined) and refusal rates for subclass 186 visas are currently 30%.

DHA noted substantial fraud being encountered in these visa programs, which has contributed to the high refusal rates and high risk profile of these visa programs currently.

Migration practitioners have recently reported waves of occupation-specific refusals recently, including large numbers of refusals for subclass 187 visas for Retail Managers from December 2017.
